During our 12 Days of Testimonies, we want to bring people's stories to life, to show how one trip has impacted them. Some people go, are radically changed, and continue to change the lives of those around them... These are their stories:
My wife and I were moved by the Lord to adopt Calvin and Piper, two of our five children, from Ethiopia. Although we have been on mission trips throughout the world, something struck us about Ethiopia. The Lord was tugging at us to come and be part of what He was already doing in caring for orphans and widows.
In 2008, we started Ethiopia Guest Home as a vehicle for ministry to orphaned and at-risk children, as well as single mothers, widows, and women with HIV. God allowed us to be the eyes and ears for organizations like Visiting Orphans by connecting with those in genuine need as well as organizations based in Ethiopia who were seeking to meet those needs…and to be a bridge connecting the two.
In 2010, we started Mission Ethiopia; an empowerment program that works through local churches in Ethiopia to provide jobs to at-risk women. As the women come to the church daily, the churches have earned the opportunity to pour into their lives and many have come to faith in Christ. The program also provides dignity as the participants have exchanged begging for a live of glorifying God by working and providing for themselves and their families with the fruit of their labor. By the grace of God, as of October, 2011, he has entrusted us with 134 full time employees in Ethiopia. This equates to the provision for almost 700 people daily.
In short, God has stirred us to stir others to come and be part of what He is doing to change lives and bring hope to effect generations in Ethiopia. We rejoice at how the Lord has allowed us to partner with Visiting Orphans to stir the church to be the hands and feet of Jesus to orphaned children throughout the world. We are humbled to think that God uses us in spite of ourselves. He knows all our faults and chooses to use us anyway. Hopefully our story will encourage you to say “yes” to how the Lord might be stirring you to be his hands and feet to bring hope to the hopeless.
There is no substitute for a firsthand experience with a very real need. We hope you will say “yes” and be part of what the Lord is doing in Ethiopia and throughout the world.
